Young & Safe
Young & Safe is Lambeth’s approach to significantly reduce serious youth violence. Young & Safe has a partnership approach, working across Lambeth First’s partners to implement short, medium and long term measures to combat factors that contribute to and cause youth violence.
The five year action plan is the culmination of the work of an Executive Commission, a ‘leading through action’ summit and ongoing work between the major players in Lambeth including the council and the police. The strategic action plan can be accessed here.
The Executive Commission, whose membership include representatives from the council, police, residents and the community and voluntary sector, made a range of recommendations designed to address the underlying causes of violent crime amongst young people.
The Young & Safe programme commissions and manages projects and services to stem the flow of violence and gang activity, to provide positive and diversionary activities, to raise aspirations and improve access to education and training and support families of at-risk young people.
The programme has a three pronged approach, providing services through commissioned providers, community and school based projects funded through the small grants programme and meeting the employment, education and training needs of individuals through the personalised grants programme.
In 2009-10 the programme commissioned a range of services to meet the priorities of the Young & Safe strategic action plan (targeted youth support, employment education and training, family support and improved enforcement). These services will continue to operate in 2010-11, alongside our key working support.
We have commissioned an additional 6 new projects in 2010-11 in order to meet emerging identified needs for children and young people. These are:
- Young Women
- Young Men
- Survivors of Youth Violence
- Education
- Support to avoid exclusion
- Localities
