Helping children and young people overcome the effects of parental substance misuse

Launched in May 2010, the Compass Hidden Harm project was set up by the Young People’s Substance Misuse Joint Commissioning Group to meet the needs of children and young people affected by parental substance misuse.

The aim of the initiative is to offer a safe, non judgmental environment where young people can openly discuss their feelings. Anyone aged 5 to 19 can now be referred by any agency, organisation or service to the project.

One-to-one sessions are based on an art focused format which enables behavioural and emotional difficulties to be identified and explored. This can lead to improved verbal communication, develop abilities in self observation and reveal ways to cope with anxiety and frustration.

Claire Winship, who manages the project, said "Compass is really excited to have the opportunity to develop this innovative service supported by our partners in the borough of Lambeth."

The Hidden Harm service is made possible through a multi agency approach as this often hidden group of families can have complex needs, requiring a range of support and intervention.

For more information about the project  email Claire Winship or call Compass on 020 7737 3579.
