Lambeth's Sustainable Community Strategy

What is a Sustainable Community Strategy?

Sustainable communities are places where people want to live and work, now and in the future.  They meet the needs of existing and future generations, are environmentally sensitive and contribute to a high quality of life.

A sustainable community is one which allows people to have a say in the way their own neighbourhood is run. They are also safe and inclusive, well planned and offer equal opportunities and good services for all.

A Sustainable Community Strategy is a detailed vision of how a borough will work to deliver sustainable communities. Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs) such as Lambeth First are responsible for developing the strategy, which responds to the views of partners and the people of the borough.

Our Sustainable Community Strategy

Lambeth has come a long way in recent years and we are proud of our multicultural make-up and our diverse, cohesive communities.

Our 2020 Vision is Lambeth’s Sustainable Community Strategy.  It enables us all to make sure Lambeth becomes a diverse, dynamic and enterprising borough at the heart of London.

The strategy was developed through extensive consultation with local neighbourhoods, businesses and community organisations and sets out how we will work together to address the issues and concerns you have for your neighbourhood.

Our 2020 Vision is the overarching plan for the borough for the next 12 years and every other major plan or strategy in Lambeth will be influenced by it. It guides the future of the borough, making Lambeth a better place to live, work, play, do business, train, study and visit.

The main theme of the strategy is to tackle worklessness*. In the consultation, this was identified by residents and partners as a key issue causing a number of social and economic problems across Lambeth. We believe many of the issues facing our borough can be resolved by tackling the causes and the effects of worklessness.

Lambeth First delivers projects that fit with the strategy’s vision, by engaging employers, untangling employment services and working with neighbourhoods to improve services.

*Worklessness describes people who are out of work but who want a job. It includes people claiming unemployment benefits, people not currently in paid work who are seeking employment and those who are economically inactive.
