'Green Doctors' give Lambeth's residents energy health check

A team of five ‘green doctors’ funded by Lambeth First's Future Jobs Fund will be hitting the streets in Lambeth’s Low Carbon Zone (LCZ) to give homes an energy health check.

The new recruits have all been trained up to offer householders living in the Brixton LCZ free advice on how to cut carbon emissions. All the new green doctors are local to the area and Kees Frederiks, the Low Carbon Zone Green Champions Officer, said they will be helping to promote the zone and all its benefits.

Kees said: “The green doctors are a resource for the residents in the Low Carbon Zone. They will be showing residents the benefits of the zone – saving money, cutting carbon emissions and also giving people the chance to take part in community events. We’ll be letting people know what we are doing and residents will be able to book themselves in for a home energy visit.”

The Brixton Low Carbon Zone is one of ten pilot schemes running across London aimed at finding innovative ways of cutting carbon use.

Among the new green doctors is Steven Christoforou, who signed up to the scheme through the Future Jobs Fund after losing his job as tree surgeon because of the recession.

The 40-year-old from Camberwell said: “We have been training and there has been a lot to take in. I am new to it all, but like most people I am aware of the environmental issues through the media and things like that. We will be working in the low carbon zone and be able to give out advice to anyone who wants it.”
