To mark this year’s Mental Health Action Week (4- 10 April 2010), Lambeth First partner NHS Lambeth has launched a range of resources to help organisations and individuals take positive steps to improve their wellbeing.
The resources, which are available free to anyone living or working in Lambeth, include a bookmark and travel pass wallet and highlight the Five Ways to Wellbeing developed by the New Economics Foundation.
These are:
• Connect: getting to know the people who live around you helps to give you a sense of community.
• Be Active: keeping active makes you feel good. Find something you enjoy – cycling, swimming, dancing and just do it!
• Take Notice: be mindful of the moment and how you are feeling. Reflecting on your life experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you.
• Keep Learning: learning a new skill can make you feel good about yourself, confident and adventurous.
• Give: helping someone else can make you feel better about yourself. Help your neighbour or friend out by lending a hand.
The Five Ways to Wellbeing also expresses the aims and objectives of Lambeth First's publication Wellbeing and Happiness in Lambeth: the Lambeth Mental Wellbeing Programme 2009-12.
Launched in November 2009, this sets out our ambitions and actions to improve mental wellbeing and resilience in Lambeth. It identifies the key elements of mental wellbeing for communities and individuals as:
• Kindness and respect for self and others.
• Fairness and social justice in everything, especially service provision.
• Being able to take part in community activities and decision making.
“Good mental health and wellbeing is important to all of us”, says Dr Sarah Corlett, consultant in public health medicine at NHS Lambeth. “It’s about feeling positive about today and having hope about the future, and these resources promote simple steps anyone can take to improve their wellbeing. They are part of a range of support provided across the borough by the Lambeth First partners to help Lambeth people lead rich and fulfilled lives.”
